A Journey Of Discovery

What is the RMF?

Why am I doing this?

Essentially, life is short and while I’m alive I want to experience the best music that the world has to offer, nay, has ever had to offer.

Old or new, from the stiffly traditional to the most mind-bendingly contemporary, if it’s good, I want to hear it.

“What do you mean, ‘good’? Surely musical taste is subjective?” I hear you say. Well, yes, while it is true that we all have different preferences for what music we might want to listen to at any particular moment, along my musical travels I have discovered to my great joy that good music transcends genre. I’ve seen ‘metallers’ enjoying certain electronic music, technoheads who own a few indie CDs, and even the most brainwashed of chart-worshipping sheep has been known to have come into possession of “a really cool old album” by accident, only for it to become their favourite album.

This is the cream that I seek. Not necessarily music that has no mass appeal, but not necessarily not music that has no mass appeal either. If you get my drift.

Good music has something that makes it good. That “something” could be almost anything, from the most obviously superb vocal performance to the smallest subtle hi-hat fill that appears only once in the track. It could be that the song has been wonderfully produced or that it has some kind of historical value, or that there is a story that adds to the big picture.

Essentially, as far as music is concerned, I’m an Info Freako. There is no end to what I wanna know. And in true Jesus Jones style, zeroes and ones will take us there.

I want to know why a particular recording of an oft-performed jazz standard from the 50s was so important to the genre.

I want to know which albums were considered revolutionary and understand them in the context of the other music that was around at the time.

I want to know how subgenres were spawned, how politics and social trends have affected the music of a particular time.

What I want most of all is to develop a community at the RMF for like-minded music-lovers everywhere. A place where ideas, recommendations and opinions can be exchanged. A place for record collectors, hi-fi enthusiasts, music teachers and students, veterans and rookies alike.

Every community needs people, and we’re no different so get yourself signed up in the forum and get posting!

Great things come from humble beginnings.

Thanks for reading.

Best regards,

Muso.

Recent music releases

Is it just me, or is everything crap?

It’s got to the point where I can’t even bring myself to listen to the radio or watch a modern music TV show or channel anymore. Too large a proportion of recent music releases just leave me cold.

So, where to go? Where can I find the hidden gems of the world?

There’s surely an almost endless supply of good music out there that never gets airplay in the modern commercial media.

It is this quest with which I am charged… sick of being brainwashed with the endless turgid drivel spouted by plastic pseudo-musicians on behalf of the suits in the Pop Money (ahem, I mean Pop Music) Industry, I must seek ‘neath every stone to find the tiny minority of music out there that’s actually worth spending my time listening to.

A fan of music for many years, and a musician too, I have searched in vain for a meeting place of similar minds. Somewhere to share one’s discoveries and seek new recommendations. Finally, that place exists… the REAL Music Forum.

Visit the forum and let our quests converge. Recommend rare and wonderful music, and seek recommendations of your own from others who share our quest for better music.

If you know of any recent music releases that you believe will stand the test of time, feel free to recommend them in the forums.

There is good new music out there, but it tends to get buried beneath the endless white noise of the mainstream, but whether old or new, I’m always eager to listen, so please enjoy your stay, dust off your typing fingers (and your loudspeakers), get yourself into the forums and get involved!

Regards,

Muso
